I started my working life as a chemist. After several years I found that my interest lied in sport and nutrition. So I returned to University and completed an MSc in Sports Nutrition. During my final year, a paper relating to fat burning drew my attention.

This was in 2008. I spent the following years digging deep into this area and what I found contradicted most of what I originally was taught and the general conventional sports nutrition recommendations.

I have since worked as a Performance Nutritionist specializing in endurance sports and focusing on fat adaptation. This has led me to work with some of the worlds top cyclists, distance runners and triathletes from Pro World Tour Cycling teams such as BMC Cycling to National Ironman Champions. 

Along the way, I have implemented much of what I have studied and have won several ultra marathons as well as shorter mountain/trail races using these strategies. What I have found is that fat adaptation is a big picture with lots of components. All of these components need to be optimized and gelled together in order for true fat adaptation to enhance performance. In addition, what I also have discovered is that true fat adaptation enhances health and longevity also.

What this has created is an almost underground movement of lone rangers who have paved their own way in search of the true science and its application in the real world of performance and health.

Despite the clear benefits both to performance and health, there has been a strong opposition to a more fat based nutrition approach for various questionable reasons. A heavy commercial reason exists and this is unfortunately one of the biggest barriers to unbiased research and ultimately academic knowledge. What this has created is an almost underground movement of lone rangers who have paved their own way in search of the true science and its application in the real world of performance and health. I have spent many years as one of those lone rangers but thankfully now there are others and I have been fortunate enough to meet Peter Defty, another pioneer, along the way on the same path. There is definitely strength in numbers, which is why I have teamed up with Peter and the OFM team and hope that others can benefit from our work.
